Design Operations

2025 - 2026

Transforming a creative department into a scalable, AI-integrated revenue function

At WISE Digital Partners, the creative function lacked operational structure, consistent output, and alignment to business performance metrics.

Problem Space

I architected AI-integrated creative workflows across design strategy and production, restructured team composition to scale billable capacity, and unified Design and Copy under a Human-Centered model — securing executive approval for a full Q4 Creative Roadmap.

Building a globally distributed design studio with 70% cost reduction

Semiologie needed a high-caliber distributed creative team capable of delivering at agency quality — without agency costs or timelines.

CRO & Revenue Growth

2015–2018

Adding $100K+ in monthly revenue through creative-led CRO

Reviews.com needed to validate and scale a CRO program that connected creative execution directly to revenue performance.

Problem Space

I launched the CRO program with a lean team of three, generating $60K in early revenue. Then I scaled the cross-functional team — engineers, designers, analysts — and built an 18-month creative growth strategy that secured C-level approval and sustained measurable performance gains.

Content & Brand Reach

2012–2015

Leading a visual journalism team to national media placements and SEO dominance

Highereducation.com needed creative content that could compete for organic traffic in a crowded vertical — and break through to earned media at scale.

Problem Space

I player-coached a nine-person visual journalism team — AD, designers, writers, analysts — to operationalize an infographic content strategy with viral reach. The work secured placements in Scientific American, Fast Company, Mashable, and TechRepublic, driving measurable SEO gains and category leadership.

02

The principles.

I operate at the intersection of leadership vision and execution, building the structures that turn creative into a measurable, accountable function. My job isn't to be the best designer in the room. It's to build the team that is.

Over 20 years, I've scaled globally distributed creative teams, embedded AI into production strategy, and built in-house studios that replace agency spend without sacrificing quality. I bring systems thinking to creative leadership, and I report creative in the language of revenue and cost.

The principles here aren't values posted on a wall. They're an operating model: developed, tested, and refined across startups, acquisitions, turnarounds, and scale-ups. Each one has a job to do.

Leverage over effort

Systems

Output is shaped more by where effort is applied than by how much. I design roles, systems, and structures first so the team's energy compounds rather than dissipates. Sustained effort that fails to change outcomes is a signal of missing structure, not missing will.

Diagnosis before action

Strategy

Recurring problems are almost always misdiagnosis, not execution failure. Before I restructure a team, change a process, or push for speed, I name the actual constraint, causally and specifically. Action without diagnosis isn't momentum; it's noise.

Systems as multiplier

Operations

Good systems scale good judgment. Bad systems scale dysfunction just as efficiently. I treat workflow design, decision rights, and feedback loops as primary leadership responsibilities, not administrative overhead. I audit what systems actually amplify, not what they intend to.

Judgment is the binding constraint

Decision-making

Systems and data inform decisions; they don't make them. When everything else is in place, results are still limited by how calls get made under uncertainty. I design environments that surface decision points clearly, require explicit choices, and treat delayed decisions as active risks.

Feedback as performance multiplier

Growth

Performance improves at the speed feedback is received and acted on. I build feedback loops that surface reality early, in creative reviews, in 1:1s, in how I structure team rituals. Delayed feedback isn't kindness; it's a structural failure that amplifies error.

Concentration and tradeoffs

Focus

Trying to satisfy every demand is itself a decision, one that diffuses effort and erodes trust. I name priorities explicitly, withdraw resources from lower-impact work to reinforce focus, and treat every yes as an implicit no. Clarity requires the willingness to disappoint.

Candor in expectations

Culture

If standards aren't stated, people invent their own and you get inconsistency at scale. I surface decision logic, document how choices get made, and treat ambiguity in expectations as a leadership problem, not a people problem. Clarity is an act of respect.

The verdict.

"Sam's strength is strategy — mapping complex situations so they can be understood simply and acted on. Managing teams, developing talent, and above all: execution. High level, fast, and painless. He proved he could be effective with various people and within various cultures — a rare thing."

Salil Jain / Founder & CEO, Stripes39

"He's been the tip of the creative spear for the most demanding CEO I've worked with in 15+ years, successfully driving multiple brands from scratch to new heights. Even among tens of thousands of creative leaders at Amazon, I never encountered someone so deeply skilled and multi-faceted."

Wing Yew Lum / Founder, Storytellers.ai

"Sam brings a rare combination of creative leadership, operational thinking, and business awareness that is hard to find. During his time with us, WISE grew 28% and saw meaningful improvements in profitability. His leadership and execution were an important part of that progress."

Patrick Dillon / CEO, WISE Digital Partners

"Sam's strategic acumen, coupled with an exceptional ability to address both overarching business objectives and essential daily details, is remarkable. Under his leadership, we flourished as a team and excelled as individuals. Any organization would benefit from his strategic creative leadership."

Kellie Komorita / Senior Designer, Social Driver

"Sam created an environment where I felt both challenged and supported. He helped me understand how technical work directly supports business outcomes — a mindset that shapes how I approach teamwork and problem-solving to this day."

Derek Han / Software Engineer, Microsoft

04

The system.

Speak the P&L's language

I report creative performance in business terms: revenue influence, cost efficiency, and retention impact. Executives don't trust what they can't measure. I make sure they can measure it.

Systems before heroics

Scalable creative functions don't run on individual brilliance. They run on well-designed workflows, clear briefs, and operational infrastructure that holds quality at volume. Heroics are a symptom of missing systems.

AI as infrastructure

I embed GPTs and Claude into creative ops at the structural level: strategy, research, production. The goal is increased throughput and reduced cost without sacrificing creative depth. AI is a lever, not a feature.

Potential over pedigree

A perfect portfolio is a record of past performance. Curiosity and coachability predict future growth. I build structured mentorship and stretch assignments that accelerate development faster than experience alone.

Visibility by design

Creative teams that are invisible get cut. I make the work visible, celebrate wins publicly, and build cross-functional relationships that make creative indispensable to the business, not just a service function.

Feedback that builds

Every critique is a teaching moment. Feedback tied to the brief, not personal taste, builds judgment over time. The goal is a team that knows why good work is good, not one that waits to be told.

Let's make your creative function unstoppable.
